Announcement for 1/3 and 1/10:
For the final two weeks, I will be in my office (Research Building 405) grading papers during the class time. There is no class meeting. You are welcome to stop by my office to discuss your writing if you have any questions. I might be able to return your Process Essay, but you might need to wait to receive your Rewriting Assignment and Cause-Effect Essay. I will try to finish them before Week 18, but there are no guarantees. My grading workload is very heavy this semester. Thank you for understanding.
If you don't see me, I will send a list of your scores and final grade by email before I submit your final grade. This will give you time to see your final grade and ask any questions before it is submitted to the university.
WEEK 15: (12/20)
Please prepare for the Cause-Effect Essay exam. I apologize that this material is being uploaded late. Please study the model in the textbook as well as the example models below.

WEEK 13: (12/6) due 12/13
The homework this week is the Rewriting Assignment, a major assignment that is 10% of your final grade.
The assignment:
Please rewrite your Benefits Essay to the best of your ability. All of you have improved your writing since the Benefits Essay was last written. Let's see how well you have improved. Follow my suggestions for changes.
Grading:
You will be graded on the changes you make to your essay according to my suggestions. If you can't read my comments, please ask me. Most of the correction symbols can be found on page 309 and 310 of your textbook with examples. But please don't just correct grammar. Change any content that is necessary, including the outline, title, introduction, body, and conclusion.
If you type it, please print it again. If you prefer to rewrite it by hand, you must rewrite the whole essay, not only the changes you make. I will also collect your original essay with my comments, so please bring the original back to class.
WEEK 12: (11/29)
There is no homework this week. If you have extra time, you can preview Chapter 6, the Cause-Effect Essay. This week we will begin our advanced essays, leading to the final exam.
WEEK 11: (11/22)
Please complete the Process Essay for homework. It must be turned in on Friday 11/29. Remember that you must type the outline. In class, you will turn in your outline, essay, and one more thing that we will complete in class. Bring your printed outline and essay to class.

WEEK 10: (11/15)
Please write (type or handwrite) the OUTLINE of the Process Essay. Use the same topic that you began in class by writing the five steps on your cards. Or you can change your topic, but you need to create five more cards. On the back of the cards, please write one follow-up question for each step.
Here is the model essay and outline for the Cookies essay that we discussed in class.
As a reminder, the topic is to teach your reader how to do a skill that you have experience learning yourself. It must begin with "How to become __________"

WEEK 8: (11/1)
Please preview Chapter 5 about The Process Essay, our next essay style that we will begin next week. Chapter 5 in the textbook begins on page 101. There is no other writing homework this week.
WEEK 7: (10/25)
After three weeks of preparing your Expository Essay (Benefits Essay) homework, it's time to take a break. No homework! See you next week when we discuss more about the target reader and start our new essay style.
WEEK 6: (10/18)
Technically there is no homework this week, but students were given the option to complete a 3rd draft of their essay after learning how to improve the essay in class. If you decide to choose that option, please give me the following in class on 10/25.
1. 1st draft (label the first homework as "first draft")
2. 2nd draft (this is the rewritten homework assignment to make the essay more like the Native American Influences model)
3. 3rd draft (optional, but not necessary)
4. Outline (we started this in class on Friday)

WEEK 5: (10/11)
Homework: (due 10/18)
Write a second draft of the Benefits Essay based on what we learned in class, especially on changing the introduction. Try to copy the style of the Native American model essay that we analyzed in class. I am attaching the PDF version of the essay for your reference.
Tips about rewriting your essay:
Rewrite the introduction
Make your body paragraphs longer than the first draft
Add a final comment to your conclusion.
Please DOUBLE-SPACE your essay and type this one! You must print it out on paper and turn it in to me in class this week. Thank you!
WEEK 4: 10/4
Homework: (due 10/11)
Write the first draft of an essay on the following topic. Use BASIC ESSAY STYLE that we practiced in class.
The general topic will be: The Benefits of ___________
Choose the topic of your interest based on your personal experience.
Consider the question: What are the benefits that you get from doing this activity or having this interest?
If you do research on the Internet, do not copy someone else's ideas. You must consider from your personal point of view based on your experience. This is an informative essay (giving your reader information) as you share the benefits they would gain if they tried it themselves.
Example:
The Benefits of Weight Training
1. Building stronger muscles and better physique/figure
2. Losing weight
3. Maintaining self-discipline to keep to a schedule of diet and exercise
Reminder:
You are not allowed to use AI tools, Grammarly, or anything else that helps write or correct your sentences. You must write all of this yourself. Remember this is just a first draft. In class, we will learn how to write it better the second time.
WEEK 3: 9/27
There is no written homework this week. However, if you have not gotten the textbook yet, you need to get the book and bring it to each class. We may not use all of the activities or chapters in the book, but it is an ideal writing reference book for future use. Therefore, it is required that all students get the textbook. If you do not bring your textbook to class, you will lose participation points. Thank you!
WEEK 2: 9/20
Homework: (due 9/27)
Write an academic paragraph according to the model that we learned in class. You may type this assignment and print it out, or you can write it by hand. Bring it to the next class.
Note: This is just practice, not a major assignment, so you can write it by hand if it is more convenient.

This document contains the example of St. Petersburg that we wrote in class (page 1 of the doc) and also an example of the homework assignment you need to write using your partner's information from class (page 2 of the doc). Please look at the model and write it accordingly.

1. Buy the textbook: Here is the information you need. It should be available in the campus bookstore this week, or you can buy it online. The book is the 5th edition as you can see in the photo below. The most recent textbook (available at the bookstore) is the one with the feather on the cover. If you have any questions, please email me. :)
2. Write a business letter. The topic is to write a complaint letter about a problem that you have recently experienced. You should break the problem into three parts that will become the body of your letter. If you were not in class on Wednesday, you can refer to Wednesday's PPT to help you understand it better. Please refer to the model "template" below and remember to include each part in your formal business letter.
You may type and print the assignment to give to me in class next Wednesday, or you can write it by hand neatly. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you! :)
